2011 Bulwer-Lytton Contest winner
The Bulwer-Lytton contest is to see who can come up with most turgid opening line ever. In the spirit of “It was a dark and stormy night”, the contest has been running for years now.
This year’s winner is Sue Fondrie, who came up with this fabulous opening line:
Cheryl’s mind turned like the vanes of a wind-powered turbine, chopping her sparrow-like thoughts into bloody pieces that fell onto a growing pile of forgotten memories.

I must say, that is probably my all-time favourite BL opener. It’s shorter than ever, but captures everything there is about BL. It is elegant in it’s turgid consiseness.
